I am Sol Bucalo, an Argentinean artist residing in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I am educated in both interior design and fine arts, and studied at the National University of Córdoba. Since I have been in US for a relatively short time, my latin culture and vision still heavily dominate in my art. ![]() |
[ My art is the product of my need to calm a visual urge, a longing for inner stability. In this search, I play mainly with form and texture – the two most prominent elements of my work. One important aspect of my creative process is construction. Everything needs to go through my hands: I carve and sand the foam to create the shape, I cut by hand every piece of paper used in the surface, and then I glue the paper together, forming layers that not only add texture but also give hardness and structure to the piece – the hand-cut fibers of the paper bond together forming a new whole.
The series Volumenes (Volumes) is an example of my playing. The sculpture negativo forma caracoidal (negative of snail form) was broken up like a puzzle, and each piece in the series is a different way of assembling it – similar to a deconstruction process. Organic shapes dominated my production for many years, although not deliberately. I fell for this impulse in the series Flores y árboles (Flowers and trees), where, whimsically, trees grow as carved out of flowers – the shape of one is the negative of the other.
In Autoretrato 27 (Self portrait 27) I tried to recreate the experience of my creative process. A big word yo (i) can be formed with the small cubes that also have different smaller yo and images from my past. Thus, the piece invites the viewer to play with the puzzle of me.]
